Paul-François Lacoste (1755-1826) was a priest who was born at Plaisance, near Toulouse. Presently almost forgotten, he has been teaching natural history in Clermont-Ferrand for twenty years and was additionally the director of the botanical garden of this city. He took also interest in the volcanoes of this province and published two books about them. As a follower of Eugène Patrin (1742-1825),he adhered not unreservedly to some of his somewhat extravagant ideas concerning volcanoes. Lacoste's works appear rather weak when compared to those of the count of Montlosier, another naturalist from Clermont-Ferrand, who gave proof of his shrewdness in distinguishing in his native province several categories of volcanoes.
