Tash Rabat et Gardaneh-ye-Nir - Deux caravansérails remarquables

From the latest researches, Tash Rabat (Kyrgyzstan) and Gardaneh-ye-Nir (Iran), two mountain caravanserais, are dated respectively back to close eras: 10th-12th centuries and 11th-12th centuries. Although very far away from each other, they have amazing similarities of shapes, structures and building materials. If Tash Rabat was partially restored in 1982, it seems that Gardaneh-ye-Nir was not. In the present state of affairs, these two caravanserais were never the subject of a comparative architectural survey. That is the object of this paper which will insure: - to give additional arguments for the identification of Tash Rabat with a caravanserai, controversial and uncertain identification until a recent time, - to throw light on some aspects of relations between the Seljukid and the Karakhanid, - to draw attention to the exceptional features of these two structures and to their necessary preservation as remarkable representatives of a particular typology of caravanserais.

Les caravansérails de montagne Tash Rabat et Gardaneh-ye-Nir sont datés d'après les dernières recherches de la même époque : Xème-XIIème siècle pour Tash-Rabat et XIème-XIIème siècle pour Gardaneh-ye-Nir. Bien que très éloignés géographiquement l'un de l'autre, ils présentent des similitudes de forme, de structure et de matériaux étonnantes. Si Tash Rabat a été partiellement restauré en 1982, il ne semble pas en être de même pour Gardaneh-ye-Nir. En tout état de cause, ces deux caravansérails n'ont jamais fait l'objet d'une étude architecturale comparée. Telle est l'objet de cette contribution qui permet : - d'apporter des arguments supplémentaires à l'identification de Tash Rabat comme caravansérail, identification discutée et encore incertaine jusqu'à une date récente, - d'éclairer certains aspects des rapports entre les seldjukides et le karakhanides, - d'attirer l'attention sur le caractère exceptionnel de ces deux édifices et leur préservation nécessaire en tant que représentants remarquables d'une typologie particulière de caravansérails.
