Are some languages 'more pragmatic' than others?

This study argues against the assumption that some languages are 'more pragmatic', or more 'discourse-oriented', than others, and in favour of the alternative idea that all languages are equally 'syntactic' and 'pragmatic', but vary with respect to the overt spell-out of some properties involving, e.g., the identity of the speech participants, or information structure. Under the proposed approach, crosslinguistic variation therefore has its source in morphosyntax, rather than in the way each language 'relates to discourse'.

Ce texte argumente contre l'idée que certaines langues sont 'plus pragmatiques' ou 'plus orientées vers le discours' que d'autres, et pour l'hypothèse que les toutes les langues sont également 'syntaxiques' et 'pragmatiques' mais varient quant au marquage de certaines propriétés ayant trait aux conditions d'énonciation ou à la structure informationnelle. Dans l'optique proposée la variation entre langues prend donc sa source dans la morphosyntaxe, plutôt que dans la 'relation au discours'.
