Here we report the preface entitled "Layer silicate materials and clays" related to the 14th International Clay Conference, Castellaneta Marina, Italy, June 2009. A special issue of the Philosophical Magazine collects some selected works of "Clay Science" with the purpose to show the wide range of applications and/or new fields, or recent relevant achievements in traditional, well-established subjects, or prospects of future developments, all related to material sciences.
