EL PROCESO DE CONSTRUCCIÓN SOCIAL DE NORMAS DE CALIDAD EN ALIMENTOS ORGANICOS Y LA INCLUSIÓN DE PEQUEÑOS PRODUCTORES EL CASO DE ARGENTINA

Résumé

In Argentina, drawing on the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and Union European's standards, different (social) actors involved at the organic food production and distribution enacted organic standards in 1992. These standards require third- party certification to guarantee organic products. In spite of international organizations or national governments' promotion of organic agriculture as a good alternative to small farmers, 95% of Argentinean organic food is sold at the international market and few small farmers are involved. This situation generates a wide debate about the process of certification related to the promotion of agro-ecological farms in Argentina and their differences with other countries. Drawing on convention theory, this paper analyses the qualification process of organic products as an outcome social interactions where different conventions coexist (domestic, industrial, market, civic, green). Thus, this research will analyse different ‘hybrid forums' and other social experiences around collective qualification in order to show that quality is not given, it is a social construction process.
