Antwertp is one of the largest ports in the world and a major centre of commerce and industry; it has 550,000 inhabitants, of whom some 10,500 are Jews. Unlike the case in many other cities, the large majority of these are, religiously, culturally, and socially, deeply aware of being Jewish. Religion influences the life of every Jew and the observant are many. About 11-12 per cent of the city's Jewish households are adherents of the ultra-Orthodox Hassidic movement. About 85 per cent of all the children attend Jewish schools full time. The Jews who are not observant, as well as those who are agnostics, actively take part in organizations and associations concerned with Jewish political, philanthropic, recreational, or cultural movements.

Une très grande majorité de ceux-ci, et non un secteur minoritaire comme c'est le cas dans certaines villes, mènent une vie fortement imprégnée, religieusement, culturellement, socialement, par le judaïsme. La pratique religieuse influence les activités de tous et les bons observants y sont nombreux. Environ 11 à 12 % des familles appartiennent même au mouvement hassidique, à caractère ultra-orthodoxe. Environ 85 % des enfants fréquentent des écoles juives à plein temps, qui toutes ont un caractère confessionnel. Même les Juifs peu religieux ou incroyants participent activement à la vie sociale au sein d'organisations politiques, philanthropiques, sportives, culturelles juives.
