Le grenier grec de Samarkand

The archaeological mission of Samarkand, co directed by Fr. Grenet (CNRS) and M. Isameddinov (Archaeological Institut of Samarkand), excavated from 1993 until 2004 a large warehouse of greek period in the septentrional part of the ancient city of Samarkand (Afrasiab). This building was constructed in mud brick of typical greek size directely on the natural ground; its eight oblong rooms compone an approximatively quadrated shape. It contains a huge quantity of foodstoff, in particular barley groats and millet. The fired that destroyed it allowed a good conservation of the ruins by hardening them or fossilizing them in ashes. This building expands in an exceptional way our knowledge about the greek occupation of the city and about the economical organization of the greek community.
La mission franco-ouzbèque de Samarkand, co dirigée par Fr. Grenet (CNRS) et M. Isameddinov (Institut archéologique de Samarkand), a mis au jour entre 1993 et 2004 un vaste entrepôt d'époque grecque dans la partie septentrionale de la ville ancienne de Samarkand (Afrasiab). Ce bâtiment a été édifié directement sur le sol vierge, en briques crues de format typiquement grec ; il est constitué de huit pièces rectangulaires formant une structure à peu près carrée, contenant des denrées alimentaires en grande quantité, en particulier des céréales, orge mondé et millet. L'incendie qui l'a ravagé a permis une bonne conservation des vestiges durcis par le feu ou fossilisés en cendres. Ce bâtiment vient nourrir de façon exceptionnelle nos connaissances encore restreintes sur l'occupation grecque de la ville et sur l'organisation économique de la communauté grecque.
