Genèse et interprétation des repères hypothétiques en milieu toncal - entre arbitraire et pertinence
Abstract
This paper sets out to characterize three procedures by which a clause or a phrase acquires hypothetical status within a tuncal context - i.e. a context implying disconnection from the speaker's or utterer's hic et nunc (or nuncal coordinates): 1/ a procedure involving alteration of a preconstructed state of affairs - validation of the hypothesis being precluded (contrafactual hypotheme); 2/ a procedure involving the reworking of contextual material (conjectural or rhetorical hypothemes); 3/ a procedure involving the construction of a non-precluded (potential) hypotheme. A further idea developed here is that relevance counterbalances enunciative arbitrariness : relevance and context-awareness are crucial in detecting and interpreting hypothetical status. Relevance - i.e. nuncal relevance as opposed to tuncal relevance - accounts for the difference between nuncal potential and tuncal potential.
Sont présentés ici, en milieu toncal, c'est-à-dire dans un plan autre que celui des coordonnées-origine (ou plan noncal), trois schémas de formation des repères hypothétiques : par altération d'un préconstruit (hypothème contrefactuel, forclos), par reprise d'un préconstruit (hypothème conjectural ou hypothème rhétorique), ou par structuration d'un possible (potentiel, hypothème non forclos). Les repères hypothétiques sont envisagés ici comme manifestation de l'arbitraire énonciatif : la conscience de leur genèse, de leur pertinence notionnelle, situationnelle, contextuelle ou stratégique est mise à contribution pour que ces repères soient identifiables, interprétables, recevables - la pertinence venant contrebalancer le poids de l'arbitraire.
