Un modèle spatio-temporel hybride de SIG temporel : application à la géomorphologie marine

Abstract : With the continuous development of geo-localized sensor technology and data acquisition infrastructures, environmental and urban science researchers have new opportunities to study geographic phenomena at different temporal and spatial scales. Indeed, the wide range of geographic data now available offers multiple possibilities for exploring spatio-temporal data for a better understanding of the nature of the dynamics of underlying environmental processes. In front of such opportunities, major challenges emerge and raise many methodological issues related to the conceptualization and digital representation of space-time. The objective of this research is to develop a hybrid model of the geographical space that reconciles the field and object approaches and that takes into account a fine integration of the temporal dimension. On the basis of this hybrid spatio-temporal data model, our approach specifies a wide range of spatio-temporal queries qualified as hybrid and which allows exploiting the potential of the developed model. The aim is to explore and validate to what extent such a hybrid representation can provide a feasible and semantically rich model, and on the other hand to allow the definition of manipulation mechanisms at the level of a query language for the study of complex geographic phenomena. The proposed validation context is that of a marine geomorphology dynamics phenomenon. This case is considered as a relevant example of an environmental phenomenon for which a hybrid representation makes sense. A series of performance and scalability experiments are finally reported and show how the whole model behaves.
