Les pratiques spatiales quotidiennes durant la transition vers l’âge adulte : trajectoires biographiques et espaces d’activité des jeunes montréalais·es

Abstract : In recent decades, school, work, cohabitation and marital trajectories increasingly deviate from a standard model during the transition to adulthood. Changes experienced by young adults have been widely studied by scholars, whether they are described as "typical" (such as the first job) or "atypical" (such as the return to the parental home). However, little attention has been paid in this literature to everyday spatial practices and activity spaces. Based on a collection of mixed data from a cohort of young Montreal adults followed between 2011 and 2017 (Interdisciplinary Study of Inequalities in Smoking – ISIS cohort), this PhD dissertation aims to explore and discuss changes in everyday spatial practices of young adults living in Montreal in relation to their biographical trajectories. For this purpose, a set of frequented places by young adults through their daily activities are considered. The analysis highlights that reconfigurations of activity spaces of young Montrealers during their transition to adulthood are complex. While these spatial reconfigurations are not related to the age of the participants, they are strongly associated with their school, work, cohabitation and marital trajectories, especially when these biographical trajectories are analysed together and the typical or atypical nature of the changes is taken into account. At a time when the transition to adulthood is becoming less and less “chronological,” biographical trajectories provide keys to understanding changes in everyday spatial practices during this phase of life.
