Towards a Definition of Antonin Raymond's "Architectural Identity" - A Study Based on the Architect's Way of Thinking and Way of Design

This thesis presents a study on the way of thinking and way of design of the Czech born architect Antonin Raymond(1888-1976). The data used for this study was a series of lectures and articles written by Raymond between 1935 and 1967 and original architectural drawings and photographs. These documents were all collected personally by the author at Raymond’s former studio in Karuizawa and Architectural Office in Tokyo. These documents provide a new source of information on Raymond’s residential works and have been compiled in an electronic database available with the thesis.The database includes architectural drawings, original and contemporary photographs, and general information on a majority of the residential works designed by Raymond between 1921 and 1938.

Cette thèse présente une étude sur le discours et la pratique architecturale de l’architecte américain d’origine tchèque AntoninRaymond (1888-1976). Les sources utilisées pour cette étude sont une série d’articles et de conférences rédigés par Raymond entre 1935 et 1967, ainsi que des photographies et des plans originaux. Ces sources ont été collectées de première main par l’auteure à l’agence et dans le studio d’été qui subsistent aujourd’hui, respectivement à Tokyo et Karuizawa. Ces documents constituent une nouvelle source d’information sur les villas réalisées par l’architecte dans le Japon de l’Entre-deux-guerres. Les informations fournies par ces documents ont été compilées sous la forme d’une base de données électronique. La base de données comprend des dessins d’architecture, des photographies d’époque et actuelles, et des informations générales sur chaque villa réalisée entre 1921 et 1938.
