Vivre de la mer sur les îles de l'Iroise. Questionner la notion de développement au prisme des rapports entre société et ressources

Abstract : The question is whether the marine resources can meet the current development challenges on a case study : the islands of the Iroise Sea, Ouessant, Molène and Sein. The development issues on these islands have been identified, they are economic, ecological and demographic. The field survey consisted in 53 interviews with three groups of stakeholders : project leaders, elected officials, and environmental managers ; 270 multiple choices tests provided quantitative information on island populations and their use of the sea’s resources. The results show that territory’s resources are first, natural ones, which may be threatened by the economic activities they support while they provide a living environment for island populations. The territory’s resources are also human and institutional, which are mobilized in a more or less harmonious way within the framework of local development on the islands studied. Finally, the research shows the importance of collective choice to guide a process that is not neutral: development. Through a reflection on human needs and resource management modalities, the thesis provides knowledge on the impact of chosen ways of life and development strategies of local societies on their environment.
