La parure prédynastique en contexte funéraire : technique et usage. Le cas d’Adaïma.

Abstract : When one speaks of adornment, three domains are affected: the technique, the aesthetics and the sense of being adorned in a given society. To treat artifacts of the "ornamental" (Mauss 1967) therefore requires a decomposition of these socially entangled areas. These can be associated with the different scales of analysis necessarily addressed in this systemic study: the threading thread, the adornment, the body. In order to define norms that would characterize predynastic adornment, these various fields can be interrogated. Our study is based on the predynastic site of Adaiah in Upper Egypt which revealed two necropolises containing several hundred burials. These necropolises explored by multidisciplinary methods, combining archeology and anthropobiology, present an ideal study framework. Furniture adornment was found in 187 burials. The funerary context is favorable to an archaeological study with palethnological aims because it offers the possibility to work on series of contemporary "closed sets" where the biological data of a population and the furniture characterizing its material culture are associated. The predynastic period takes place over more than a millennium (3900-2600 BC) during which Neolithic village societies will gradually transform to lead to one of the first civilizations state. Egypt, located at the crossroads of Africa and the Orient, is rich in cultural entities from which cosmogonic and ideological representations have emerged from the origins of Pharaonic society.
