L'image de Mai 68 : du journalisme à l'histoire

Abstract : This research examines the way that the events of May and June '68 were depicted by magazines and photojournalism companies between 1968 and 2015. By choosing to analyse the event true to scale, a case study of the aforementioned May ‘68 shows the extent to which (photo)journalism constructs history. An editorial chain puts together media stories: the chain is not intended to be seen and the media claim to be objective and transparent. The chain, and the role that images play in shaping and characterising events, can be brought to light by recreating the role that images play in story development and approaching them from the viewpoint of editorial frequency. This helps us to take stock of the editor’s role in the media’s development of stories. The cultural authority of the dominant representations (icons) relies on factors of professional legitimisation which gloss over the daily realities of these professions. The corporatist history which values them finds itself contested by the historical and cultural approach, which re-establishes the role of photography agencies, companies that exploit, i.e. market, images. Describing their structure - indexation/photo libraries, editing/publishing, particularly - documents the production of visual corpora and highlights the impact that these business structures have on the way the story of events is told using this visual content. The multiplication of editorial opportunities appears to be a structural need of this cultural industry. The effects of visual corpora being repeated - at anniversaries or "commemorations" - are no longer justified by a finite photographic archive but can be explained by the resale strategy of certain image libraries. This circulation of representations, which leads to circularity and the media’s stories of historic events becoming fixed, shares the mechanisms characteristic of cultural constructions (LW. Lewine).
