La poétique du vide dans les romans de Charles Robert Maturin

Abstract : This doctoral dissertation deals with the poetics of emptiness in the novels by Charles Robert Maturin (1780 - 1824). First, emptiness is a major theme in the novels : the absence and inadequacies of parents undermine society in the novels, thus making it possible for illusion to replace reality and thereby transforming the characters into wanderers. The original void and its consequences in turn raise the problem of emptiness. Indeed, emptiness not only results in, but also is an essential component of wandering. Finally, it is not only a theme as it can be seen as a tool in what could then be called a poetics of emptiness in that the author and his narrators create a linguistic system meant to use and control it. Hence the last question : do the author and the narrators really master the text or do they rather tell a story in which their unnameable truth appears in spite of themselves?
