Déflecteur en polymères électro-optiques en vue de la réalisation d’un convertisseur analogique-numérique tout-optique de signaux hyperfréquences à 40 Géch/s

Abstract : In high-speed communication systems, such as electronic warfare systems and broadband satellites, it’s desirable to carry out the maximum of signal processing in digital domain for reducing not only the number of cumbersome analog components, but also offering more flexibility and performances. Therefore, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) dealing with signals of tens of GHz instantaneous bandwidth (BW) are required. As it’s very difficult for electronic ADCs to meet such requirement, we study an electro-optic (EO) deflector for realization of an all-optical ADC combing high sampling rate and high resolution. This all-optical ADC takes advantage of both low timing jitter of laser pulses and the excellent velocity matching between optical and electrical waves in polymer materials. Due to our optimum design of driving electrodes, we achieved an intrinsic BW of 33,8 GHz and a resolution higher than 4.7 bits over the frequency band from DC to 20 GHz. The highest resolution of 6.3 bits is attained at 2.9 GHz. In addition, electrical access of the EO deflector through a large BW grounded coplanar to coupled microstrip transition was studied. Both microwave signal applying and requirement of chromophores poling were taken into account. BWs of 19 and 23 GHz for the transitions were experimentally achieved with and without the poling circuit respectively. Otherwise, we have optimized technological processes for the deflector fabrication, i.e., nanoimprint lithography for trenches realization in the cladding polymer and lift-off process for driving electrode deposition.
