Théorie des systèmes complexes appliquée à la modélisation d'environnements numériques d'apprentissage de nouvelle génération

Abstract : The emergence of social networks, MOOCs, network-based informal learning and connectivist approaches to learning have made analyzing e-learning platforms more and more complex. Models used until now to account for instrumented activity for cognitive purposes have started to show their limits. The "massive" aspect of MOOCs, for instance, is hard to "represent" with such models. Its "open" aspect is just as difficult to model. Furthermore, the evolution of these environments is chaotic and their effects appear to be unpredictable. Yet chaotic does not mean random. A complex system does have an unpredictable nature and it is not possible to predict, that is to say calculate, the outcome of its processes. But it is possible, thanks to systemic modeling, to elaborate plausible scenarios based on observable data (traces of activity, simulation results, main trends, emergent proprieties, etc.). As Paul Valéry would say, "we can only reason with models". Since a state-of-the-art e-learning platform can be perceived as a complex phenomenon, it can thus be correctly represented and analyzed using the "systemic modeling of complexity" paradigm. This was the choice we made in this HDR, a choice which will guide our future research.
