Research on assertive utterance structure containing the morpheme que in spoken franch
Recherches sur les formes de la prédication dans les énoncés assertifs en français contemporain
Résumé
The dissertation deals with the syntactic function of the connective morpheme "que" in assertive utterances in spoken French. The analysis is based on a corpus of more than 800 occurrences of que extracted from spontaneous speech field notes, mainly from the area of Marseilles in the south of France. The results of the analysis are compared with statistics based on a control corpus made of transcriptions of recordings of interviews performed in the same area. As regards the study of the grammatical aspects of the constructs under consideration, the analytical framework is a variant of dependency grammar An information structure based model is used to encompass the discourse oriendted functions of the clauses introduced by que. The main result achieved is that que appears more as a discourse connective an an utterance mood marker than as a formal subordination device. The analysis gives a full account of non standard uses generally explained in an ad-hoc way by standard grammatical approaches : linking relatives, coordinating subordinates, reversed subordinates , epexegesis, subordinateds acting as main clauses. The main nex analytical concepts developed here are : the "période" (paragraph) as the maximal syntactic unit against the sentence, the pragmatic dependency marker function of so called subordinating conjunctions. The grafting of discursive units onto grammatical structure, the macrosyntactic or "pragmatic" predication.
La thèse étudie dans un corpus de français parlé dans la région de Marseille le fonctionnement grammatical et discursif du morphème que, dans un cadre alliant grammaire de dépendance (Approche pronominale) et macrosyntaxe.
