Migrations et division sociale de l'espace en Toscane : structures et dynamiques.

Abstract : This thesis sets out to study the relations between the social division of the space of a host social formation and the spatial distribution of its immigrant populations. Since the 1970s, the international migrations from the Periphery to the Centre countries have grown in importance and diversified ; formerly an emigration country Italy has become an immigration country. The spatial distribution of immigrants is determined by the international division of labour, the functional and economic division of the host space as well as the special characteristics of the migrant communities. The institutional filters established (residence card, employment permit), set the living and the residence conditions of the migrants. Three levels are highlighted to examine the link between immigration and territorial economy : Italy for the context of its territorial disparities, Tuscany for its small-scale industrialization which is typical of the “Third Italy”, and Florence, the regional capital, for the low service sector of its urban economy. Our methodology - bibliography, statistics, surveys, interviews - shows a moving reality which can hardly be encompassed. The social division of the inner city and suburban space of Florence shows the close relationship between the space of the social classes and the spatial distribution of the foreign communities according to their functions in the local production system. The Roms' situation is given as an example as they are considered as a marginal population set apart from the host social formation.
