Cheminements et récits atlantiques. Pour une géographie paysagère sensible en mouvement

Abstract : This thesis explores the coastal landscape as an ontological, affective and metaphorical relation to the world. The study brings together the Irish and the French context by focusing on an Atlantic terrain, which is cultural, geopoetic and liminal. The thesis inscribes itself in the contemporary research on the body and the affect. It invites to consider how they matter to grasp the movement between being and becoming on the coast. The thesis engages with how the sensate, the emotions and affective spatialities allow us to think about landscape as a poetical way of dwelling. Through story-telling and embodied mobility, the thesis investigates the spatial, temporal and affective movement of in-betweenness that animates the intimate and ethical landscape relation. Three types of narratives are mobilised to investigate the qualities of the relationships peoples have with the coast. The geopoetical writings of Julien Gracq and Tim Robinson provide a insight into the imagination and practice of the coast. My voice enters the thesis to narrate the experience of the fieldwork articulated with phenomenology. Finally, a participatory cartography on the emotional connections to the coast by inhabitants and visitors performed landscape narratives in Dingle Peninsula (Ireland) and in Belle-île-en-mer (France). This thesis underlines how landscape is a poetical praxis, which transforms landscape representations in ways of doing and feeling. Embodied topographies are animated by movements and pauses ; the scanning of the eyes is completed by the rhythm of the heart.
