VOLUMIC FACETING OF SMECTIC-A LIQUID CRYSTALS

The focal conics decorating the Smectic-A/ Isotropic interfaces are intrinsic bulk defects. They relax the surface energy anisotropy, realizing for lamellar systems a volumic faceting analogous to the surface faceting of usual three dimentionnal cristals.
