This introductory chapter presents an overview of a distinctive perspective on legal practice and briefly presents the chapters that follow. Few studies of the various activities that make up the practice of law examine the embodied and interactional work that produces legal outcomes. In order to delve into the moment-to-moment production of legal practices, studies in this volume take an ethnomethodological approach to legal activities. The term "ethnomethodology" was coined by Harold Garfinkel in the 1960s. Ethnomethodology takes comprehensive view of social order as a ‘methodic achievement’ produced in many different circumstances through the activities of a society members. The chapters in this volume take ethnomethodological and conversation analytic approaches to activities in courtrooms and other settings in which lay and professionals interact. The specific focus of each chapter is on the way lay and professional parties orient to legal relevancies and produce legally accountable outcomes.
