Sépulture et appartenances : les pratiques funéraires dans les familles immigrées d’origine maghrébine en question

Abstract : The article aims to examine the funeral pratices of immigrants from Maghrib and their descendants. Taking as a case study the French city of Chalon-sur-Saône, it addresses the impact of social groups and communities over issues related to death and burial that are generally thought of as resorting to individual and familial choices. For instance, can the choice of one’s burial site in France be seen as an expression of the individuation of one’s funeral project, especially when the “repatriation” of deceased bodies is still the norm ? Shall we see it instead as the symptom of a more complex dynamics highlighting the many social, political and identity issues related to death for Muslim immigrants ?
