Un travail sous tension. Les agents immobiliers américains entre affranchissement des contraintes salariales et marchandisation

Abstract : Based on the case of real estate agents in a medium city of the Western United States, this paper considers a definition of work by the representations and practices of the workers. Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews, it first brings an historical overview of the legitimation and professionalization of agents in American society, to then show how agents work and perceive themselves in opposition to a classical form of work – employee with a fixed compensation, time defined, separation of spheres between free time and work. The permanent work practices blur the boundaries between work and personal time and resemble a form of total commitment which brings the workers to develop more than social capital, a certain ethos in symbiosis with the goods they sell.
