As the works pervading the French literary field since the beginning of the twenty-first century are long fictions characterized by a distanced legacy of novels which are tied in with History, the macrogenetic perspective that is developed here deals with the invention by Balzac of a new form, the Oeuvre-monde, which serves as a working template for his successors’ writing. The Oeuvre-monde means referring to, and rivaling, the real, through new relationships between the world and the fiction. This work intends to study the models available to Balzac, inherited from the eighteenth century and developed by the editorial sphere in the early nineteenth century : those are historical, scientifical and historiographic models which Balzac seizes and reconfigures. Several templates regarding the organization of long works are thus underlined, through the study of the many stages leading to La Comédie humaine as it begins to be published in 1842 : there a serial model pervading L’Histoire de France pittoresque, a panoptical model ruling the project of the Etudes sociales. In the end, Balzac’s peculiar forme-sens can be understood as a text based on a generalized porosity, which enables us to think on a case by case basis. The logic which is present in all series of Etudes, as they are on the verge of being united in a long work, is characterized by the abolition of any vertical, pyramidal template. The weaving of La Comédie humaine’s text, when seen as a whole, presents us with a new form of poetic creation, which aim is faire vrai rather than carefully-crafted likelihood. The peculiar organization which is thus invented, contemporary to the rise of the democratic age, is linked to the whims of the living, to contingency and its hazards.
