Beyond diastematy : specific and semitonic indications in the gradual of saint-Yrieix (Paris, BNF, Latin 903, XIth century)

Résumé

The existence of neumes related to semitones in F-Pn lat. 903 has often been pointed out by scholars since the publication of the manucript in the Paléographie musicale and Ferritti's study on Aquitanian notation, in 1925. This paper focuses on two of these so-called "semitonic neumes", the virga 'cornue' and the 'semicircular virga', aiming to considerer their meaning and function in the gradual of Saint-Yrieix, as a point of departure of a broader research on the use of these specific virgae in the aquitanian notation.
