L'islamisme en face

Abstract : Both Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu have expressed far greater nuance in their understanding of Political Islam than anything airily vented by the French « Nouveaux Philosophes ». In the Middle East as elsewhere, the use of violence has in fact long been correlated with any and all brands of ideology and with all religions extant. After the September 11 2001 attacks, rapturously intent on denouncing the terror which had struck the United States, many Western analysts forgot to emphasize the extreme violence undergone by millions of Iraqis, Palestinians or Saudis, as a direct consequence of US foreign policies in the region. While over-emphasizing the role of history and the sources of the Islamic religion, many have omitted to further enquire into the flatly political origins of this crisis.
