Résumé
The French southern lands and seas are home to the largest national reserve and its marine domain continues to expand around the islands of Saint-Paul and Amsterdam. An unprecedented project is underway to better understand and protect their rich ecosystems in the face of growing anthropogenic pressures.
In response to the alarming IPBES report on the state of biodiversity (2019), France has decided to increase the ratio of its marine and terrestrial protected areas to 30% of the national territory by 2022. The strategy adopted included the creation of a marine protected area around these islands in the Indian Ocean. This article presents the stakes and offers a status report.
Les terres et les mers australes françaises abritent la plus grande réserve nationale et son domaine marin continue de s’agrandir autour des îles Saint-Paul et Amsterdam. Un chantier sans précédent s’ouvre pour mieux comprendre et protéger leurs riches écosystèmes face à des pressions anthropiques croissantes.
En réaction au rapport alarmant de l’IPBES sur l’état de la biodiversité (2019), la France a décidé de porter la part de ses aires marines et terrestres protégées à 30% du territoire national à l’horizon 2022. La stratégie adoptée incluait la création d’une aire marine protégée aux abords de ces îles de l’océan Indien. Cet article en présente les enjeux et en offre un état des lieux.
