Quand les cheminots rencontrent les hackers… Immersion au sein d’un hackathon d’entreprise et définition d’un « dispositif-frontière »

Originating in hacker culture, the hackathon has made its way to the corporate setting where it is used to apprehend new objects and work methods coming from digital worlds. This article proposes an ethnographical immersion in an in-house hackathon set up in 2012 by a major railroad company to co-supervise the production of services by its employees, with actors specialized in the field of digital innovation. This case is studied through an ecological approach to social worlds that facilitates describing the boundary characteristics of the hackathon where an action framework that is sufficiently flexible to accommodate the diversity of the objectives associated with it can be established. By describing the hackathon’s cooperative configurations both through the common action framework and its various participatory strategies, the article proposes to define the hackathon as a ’boundary-dispositif’ whose originality resides in the situational logic it introduces to frame interactions through the entrepreneurial spirit of the digital innovation world.
Originaire d’une culture hacker, le hackathon a fait son chemin jusqu’au monde des entreprises où il est employé pour apprivoiser les nouveaux objets et méthodes de travail provenant des mondes numériques. Cet article propose une immersion ethnographique au sein d’un hackathon interne mis en place en 2012 par une grande entreprise de transport ferroviaire pour co-encadrer la production de services par ses salariés, avec des acteurs spécialisés dans le domaine de l’innovation numérique. Ce cas est étudié à travers une application particulière de l’approche écologique des mondes sociaux qui permet de déduire les caractéristiques frontalières du hackathon où un cadre d’action suffisamment flexible parvient à se constituer, malgré la diversité des objectifs qui lui sont associés. En décrivant les différentes configurations coopératives du hackathon à travers le cadre d’action commun et les stratégies de participation, l’article propose une définition du hackathon comme un « dispositif-frontière » dont l’originalité réside dans la logique de situation particulière qu’il introduit pour cadrer les interactions à travers l’esprit entrepreneurial des mondes de l’innovation numérique.
