Habitudes pro-automobiles versus pragmatisme : comment les personnes réagissent-elles lorsqu’elles migrent des « territoires de l’automobile » vers les lieux dotés en « alternatives » ?

Abstract : One of the obstacles, identified by the social sciences, that divert some car-drivers from switching to the use of alternatives lies in “cognitive biases” : habits, reflexes, routines, errors of judgment, preference for the status quo, risk aversion and loss aversion, filtering of information, pro-car penchants are likely to prevent car-drivers from converting to alternatives even when this may be to their advantage in more than one respect. Cognitive brakes can be particularly crippling when the configuration of daily life and the action context is stable. But in our time, this stability is chronically disrupted by major or minor events in the private or professional sphere and/or by changes in mobility conditions. What happens when households leave the car-dominated territories, where auto-mobility is common sens, to places where alternatives to car use are competitive, as in Paris or its suburbs? Is it the habits that prevail or the pragmatism? Do people adapt to the new conditions of mobility by adopting alternatives or do “cognitive biases” maintain a desire to keep with auto-mobility? We sought empirical answers to these questions Through a research based on Census data.
