Probable Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) in Pre-Pottery Neolithic Cyprus
Résumé
The site of Khirokitia in Cyprus (7th-early 6th millennium BC) yielded one of the largest series of human remains for the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period in the Eastern Mediterranean and Near Eastern region (MNI = 243). The paleopathological study of this series allowed us to diagnose a probable case of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) affecting a male aged between 30 and 49 years, who also suffered from osteoarthritis. DISH has rarely been identified among prehistoric populations, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean and Near Eastern region; the case described here is currently the only one known for the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period. It provides new elements to our knowledge of the health status of the early Neolithic populations.
