Shaping the Notion of Media Influence: The Remediated Images of the Vietnam War

The photojournalistic icons of the Vietnam War result from a cultural construction and a process of iconization that took place over several decades. With every reprint and remediation, these pictures lost some of their historical context and came to be read as purely symbolic images. Their meaning has been simplified over time to bend them to a media discourse focused on the writing of history. This article presents a detailed examination of the reprints of these images in the American press since the end of the war and shows how they came to be chosen as representatives of the war but also of the work of photojournalists. Iconic photographs are now used as illustrations of the notion of media influence and represent its most popular incarnation.

Les icônes photojournalistiques du Vietnam sont le produit d’une construction culturelle et d’un processus d’iconisation qui a pris place sur plusieurs décennies. Ces images sont désormais dissociées de leur contexte d’origine et lues comme de purs objets symboliques. Leur signification a été simplifiée au fil de leurs réimpressions et remédiations pour les plier aux besoins d’un discours médiatique déterminé à écrire l’histoire. Cet article présente un examen détaillé des diverses reproductions de ces images dans la presse américaine depuis la fin de la guerre et révèle les raisons pour lesquelles elles ont été sélectionnées comme images représentatives du conflit, mais aussi du travail du photojournaliste. Les icônes sont désormais proposées comme illustrations de la notion d’influence des médias et en constituent l’incarnation la plus célèbre.
