A brief history of the relations between numbers and quantities in the primary curriculum in France

Résumé

This paper tackles the issue of quantities in the primary curriculum in France, especially the crucial changes that occurred during the New Math: creation of a domain “measurement”, elimination of quantities from “reference knowledge” for numbers and ratios while implementing New references. It shows how these changes still impact the teaching of numbers and ratios.
