Abstract : The road is usually considered to fall within the technical sphere. However, it can also be considered as a matter of “architecture”. Illustrated by an abundant and largely unprecedented iconography, this book shows how, since Antiquity, paths, roads, streets, boulevards, highways, motorways and parkways could be considered as being – at the same time – solid, useful and even beautiful. This genealogy explains the origin of most of our current road systems – which we wrongly assume to be specific to the automobile (interchanges, roundabouts, turnpike roads, multimodal routes, etc.) – invented at the time of horse-drawn carriages, sometimes even experimented within formal gardens or picturesque parks. Seen in this light – and through a series of “long cuts” covering extended periods (paradigms of the built, the garden and the flow) – the prism of the road reveals a tradition which closely associates the knowledge and objects of architects, engineers, gardeners, urban planners, now considered as distinct fields. This publication is thus presented as a complete historical book on the largely undocumented “architecture of the territory”, which is presented as the common ground of the discipline of planning. In the face of today's uncertainties about the number and size of future vehicles, as well as on their speed and energy of locomotion, this rediscovery of a long tradition of road design ultimately allows us to consider the road no longer as a functionally overdetermined object – doomed to technical obsolescence – but as a permanent and constitutive element of the territory, capable of integrating a growing number of issues (environmental, social, urban, aesthetic, etc.) and to undergo the processes of transformation,
