Nemo est quin... : origine d'une construction atypique

Abstract : The analysis of the subordinate clause introduced by quin in nemo est quin… – which could be a relative or a conjunctive clause – has been much debated. This atypic structure, in which the subordinate clause can be compared to the relative clauses that Damourette and Pichon call « phrasoïdes », can be accounted for by the origin of the use of quin in this phrase, thanks to the reanalysis of the subordinating conjunction as a relative pronoun in the phrase nemo… quin (with a verb which is not esse).
