Signage using semiotics in visual communication for data protection and privacy on the Web

Abstract : The objective of the research work is to present the preliminary results of work in progress on the design of "signagrams" relating to the case of data protection and privacy on the Web. Signage is a specific artificial system for visual communication. The signagram is the signage writing unit. It uses figurative pictograms to form its content and complete its description of concepts. The usefulness of this signage system is to present structured information to be read quickly by users on online applications. We rely on the theory and method of semiotics as well as on the rules of signage. We make the signagrams humanreadable and machine-readable for online applications and suggest using the XML technology. At the present, this work has resulted in the creation of 100 signagrams. Individuals from any culture, age group or social environment could use the signage system.
