Traduire Bourdieu : traduire l’habitus ? Une étude de la traduction en chinois de La Distinction. Critique sociale du jugement

Abstract : Pierre Bourdieu’s most important work published in 1979, Distinction. A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste, provides a privileged observation site for studying translation in the social sciences and humanities. In the elaboration of his central concepts, Bourdieu makes use of numerous operational concepts, exploits a sociological corpus deeply rooted in the French context, but proposes a universal methodology. This article selects excerpts from the Chinese translation published in 2015, in which the translation of certain operational concepts raises questions; it is also noted that the French society corpus poses problems of explanation. This will thus be an appropriate occasion to examine the notion of habitus, not in terms of revealing the author’s characteristics, but to know the habitus of the work and that of its translation.
