Structural characterization and chemistry of LiF–AlF3 melts with addition of MgO and MgF2

Abstract : The LiF-AlF 3 system with additions of MgO and MgF 2 has been studied by 17 O, 25 Mg, 27 Al and 19 F in-situ high temperature NMR, ex-situ solid state NMR and X-ray powder diffraction for a wide range of compositions. The description of the speciation in the melts and its evolution with different operational parameters such as temperature, time and composition were obtained for MgF 2 /MgO-(1-x)LiF-xAlF 3 for x = 14.5, 25 and 35.5 mol% systems. The evolution of the signals provides evidence of a chemical reaction between the MgO and the salt.
