Que comprennent nos étudiants de la mécanique Newtonienne ?

Abstract : I throw a ball straight up. What are the forces acting on the ball while it goes up ? This question, which seems easy for a physics teacher, is difficult for our students. A large part of them answers «a large upward force and a small downward one». They argue that if it goes up, it's because a force raises the ball upward. In the 80's, international research studies have shown that students possess misconceptions in mechanics hat interfere with what we want to teach them. This paper presents a snapshot of what our students are thinking at various level of qualifications, in the french education system. The Force Concept Inventory was used as a probe and results are presented for 9 institutions (1 236 students), from L1 to L3, in public university, in «IUT» and in «école d’ingénieurs». An alarming report is made for our institutions, because a large number of students get their diploma despite they do not master Newtonian mechanics.
