Abstract : In his posthumous edition of selected works by Galen, published in London in 1640, Th. Goulston said he has collated these four manuscripts : the codex Adelphi, the Londiniensis, the Regius and the Venetus. In the 19th century, the German philolologists Kaibel and Marquardt failed to find traces of manuscripts corresponding to the indications given by Goulston. Rather than trying to locate lost manuscripts, our study attempts to determine their value by examining the reading variants reported by Goulston. We analyze te codex Adelphi and the Londinensis, which were used to correct the text of the De sectis ad introducendos and the De optima secta. The results are disappointing, as the variants reported by Goulston are rare, of poor quality, and never improve upon the text transmitted by our main manuscript, a Laurentianus. In addition, some variations offer corrections even though the text conveyed by the manuscript is excellent. In fact, the corrupt passage can be found in the editio princeps Aldina, published in 1525. Moreover, there is a significant gap in the print edition caused by an eye-skip. This corruption does not exist in the manuscript, but does exist in the Aldine edition and in the text proposed by Goulston. So neither Goulston nor his codices had access to the manuscript, but worked on the basis of a printed text. The unidentified codices are not actual manuscripts, but copies of the Aldine edition in the possession of Renaissance humanists, who annotated them.
