L’Insurrection kabyle de 1871. Représentations, transmissions, enjeux identitaires en Algérie et en France

Abstract : The dossier is made up of articles written with a view to identifying interpretations and memories, in Algeria and France, of the events of 1871. These events can be summed up as follows. For France, at war for months against the German armies united around Prussia, the year 1870 ended on a negative balance : on January 28, 1871, the Republican government was forced to sign an armistice. In the spring of 1871, it had to face a new conflict on the other side of the Mediterranean. Supporting Bachaga Mohamed El-Mokrani who had gone to war against the occupier on March 16, Sheikh Ameziane El-Haddad proclaimed Jihad to free Kabylia from the invader. From the Algiers region to the Tunisian border, insurgents destroyed farms and villages. Following the death of El-Mokrani in May and El-Haddad’s request for peace in July, the insurrection would end in September with the surrender of the Zouara. Its repression was accompanied by heavy sentences for its leaders and, in a context where the Treaty of Frankfurt forced France to transfer Alsace and Moselle to the German Empire, by receivership of land which was sold at low prices. Based on various works and sources - chronicles, novels, theatrical performances, essays, poetic collections - the dossier studies how this historical material around a series of defeats - of France against the new German Empire, of French politics in Algeria, of the insurrection triggered by El-Mokrani – has fuelled representations and imaginations on both sides of the Mediterranean.
