This document of the group fmr presents a bilingual (English-French) and commented version of Alfonso Shimbel's article, Applications of Matrix Algebra to Communication Nets, published in 1951 in the Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics. The author relies on recent work in matrix analysis to propose different measures that can qualify the structure of a communication network. This article serves as a methodological basis for the 1953 article by the same author entitled Structural Parameters of Communication Networks. Although Shimbel never mentions graph theory, several of his proposals have direct applications in network analysis.

Ce document du groupe fmr présente une version bilingue et commentée de l'article d'Alfonso Shimbel, Applications of Matrix Algebra to Communication Nets, paru en 1951 dans la revue Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics. L'auteur s'appuie sur des travaux récents d'analyse matricielle pour proposer différentes mesures susceptibles de qualifier la structure d'un réseau de communication. Cet article sert de base méthodologique à l'article de 1953 du même auteur intitulé Structural Parameters of Communication Networks. Si Shimbel n'évoque à aucun moment la théorie des graphes, plusieurs de ses propositions trouvent des applications directes en analyse de réseau.
