Résumé
This study is based on 478 cargo manifests of Dutch ships, originating from or bound for Smyrna. Despite the difficulties experienced by Dutch commercial houses, ships flying the flag of the Dutch Republic always played an important role in trade at the Anatolian port. Mindful of the advantages of secure transport and freedom of trade with the Dutch Republic, Ottoman merchants gave favorable exchange rates for the provisioning of Dutch ships. The captains from Amsterdam and Rotterdam, in a climate alternating between cooperation and competition, also sought to benefit from the opportunities presented by the Mediterranean flow. During the period of commercial restructuring that separated two major conflicts, the increase in the offer of Dutch merchandise met with a growth in demand.
L’enquête se base sur 478 manifestes de chargement de navires hollandais, au départ ou à destination de Smyrne. Le pavillon de la République tenait toujours une grande place dans le trafic du port anatolien, malgré les difficultés des maisons de commerce hollandaises. Sensibles à une navigation sécurisée ainsi qu’à la liberté du commerce avec les Provinces-Unies, les marchands ottomans ont rendu des arbitrages favorables à l’armement maritime hollandais. Les capitaines d’Amsterdam et de Rotterdam, dans un climat oscillant entre concurrence et coopération, ont également saisi les opportunités offertes par la caravane méditerranéenne. Dans une période de restructuration séparant deux conflits majeurs, l’élargissement de l’offre hollandaise d’armement a su rencontrer une demande dynamique.
