From the private sphere to the public sphere, the political reappropriation of an initiatory motive in Magna Grecia
De la sphère privée à la sphère publique, la resémantisation politique d’un motif initiatique en Grande Grèce
Résumé
Italiotes craftsmen are at the origin of a rich and original iconography whose potential to explore the history and the societies of Magna Graecia is still important. Due to the history of research and the complexity of sources, only few cross-sectional studies have been conducted, yet the south Italian iconography provides a coherent framework in which it is possible to adopt this type of approach. Expression of a new visual culture, this artistic production relies on a complex repertoire of symbolic motives giving it its coherence. By analyzing the path of an original motif, that of the cross torch, this contribution analyzes the semantic evolutions of iconography in time, space and in relation to its supports.
Les artisans italiotes sont à l’origine d’une iconographie riche et originale dont le potentiel pour connaître l’histoire et les sociétés de Grande Grèce est encore aujourd’hui important. L’histoire de la recherche et la complexité des sources font que peu d’études transversales sont menées, pourtant l’iconographie italiote offre un cadre cohérent dans lequel il est possible d’adopter ce type d’approches. Expression d’une nouvelle culture visuelle, cette production artistique s’appuie en effet sur un répertoire complexe de motifs symboliques qui lui confère en partie sa cohérence. En analysant le parcours d’un motif original, celui de la torche en croix, cet article analyse les évolutions sémantiques de l’iconographie dans le temps, l’espace et selon ses supports.
