Orientation activities in the French scouting organisations fit in with a tradition started by Baden Powell, in relation to their purpose as well as with regards to their symbolic scope. After World War II however, they served as a relay for the spread of orienteering, a sport first practised at the beginning of the 20th century in the Nordic countries. Sweden and Canada's example makes it possible to understand the role that scouting organisations play in exporting a sport that is in the process of becoming international and how in turn the French groups are affected by its expansion. Unable to avoid being called into question, which stems from the Libération, most of the French scouting movements are now trying to renew an offer that is on the downswing. Among the activities proposed, cross-country orientation allows surface modernity to be displayed: this new sports activity here indeed is redefined according to an educational and ideological project—and therefore according to tradition—which fundamentally have never really been challenged.
