Giotto à Assise et Padoue : une reconstitution de l’état primitif des cycles picturaux

This paper introduces the results of a study that focused on Giotto and the pictorial technique he implemented in Assisi and Padua. The author explains the research that was undertaken as part of a scientific project coordinated by the Istituto superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro, Roma (ISCR), in parallel with hypothetical reconstitutions of the two pictorial series which he could consequently realise, thanks to combined methods. This research led to the discovery of a surprising variety of operating modes experienced by Giotto and brought to light the evolution of his technical execution from one site to the other. Regarding the reconstitutions, for many scenes they give the possibility to re-establish the delicate chromatic aspect, which is sometimes completely unbalanced in situ by the alteration of the pigments and the loss of pictorial layers. Thus, the perception of the art work of the great Tuscan master, conditioned by a state of conservation that offers a partial, denatured image, is refined, revived.

Cet article présente les résultats d’une étude consacrée à Giotto et la technique picturale qu’il a mise en œuvre à Assise et Padoue. L’auteur y présente parallèlement les recherches entreprises dans le cadre d’un projet scientifique coordonné par l’Istituto superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro, Roma (ISCR), et les reconstitutions hypothétiques des deux cycles picturaux qu’il a pu ensuite réaliser, à l’aide de techniques mixtes. Ces recherches ont permis de découvrir une surprenante variété de modes opératoires expérimentés par Giotto et ont mis en lumière l’évolution de sa technique d’exécution d’un chantier à l’autre. Quant aux reconstitutions, elles permettent pour plusieurs compositions de rétablir le délicat rapport chromatique, parfois totalement déséquilibré in situ par l’altération des pigments et la perte de couches picturales. La perception de l’œuvre du grand maître toscan, conditionnée par un état de conservation qui en donne une image partielle et dénaturée est, ainsi, affinée, renouvelée.
