GESTION DES DECHETS SOLIDES DU CENTRE HOSPITALIER REGIONAL DE DALOA (CENTRE-OUEST DE LA COTE D’IVOIRE) ET DES RISQUES ASSOCIES

Abstract : Health facilities generate multiple wastes on a daily basis, which constitute a health and environmental problem in the event of poor management. The objective of our study was to improve waste management at the Daloa Regional Hospital (CHR). To achieve this, surveys were conducted with Daloa Regional Hospital (CHR) staff and users. Sharp and cutting waste at the level of each department and the risks associated with this waste has been quantified. The results showed that the waste produced within the Daloa Regional Hospital is of two types, namely healthcare waste (39.1 %) found in specialized service and waste treated as household waste (60.9 %) found in all service. 71.1 % of CHR staff do not sort the waste collected. The collected waste is transported in wheelbarrows contrary to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). In the absence of a functional incinerator, sharps waste, pharmaceutical waste, no-sharps waste and household waste are burned in the open air and anatomical waste is buried in landfill pits. The method and process of waste management produced at Daloa Regional Hospital (CHR) could result in significant risks of HIV-AIDS infection and hepatitis infection, estimated at 40.8 % and 28.7 % respectively. The acquisition of a banalizer by Daloa Regional Hospital (CHR) staff raises hopes for an improvement in waste management at this important health facility in Central West-Ivorien.
