From the 13 th to the 15 th century the Byzantine province of Epirus was an independent State, of which the capital was initially the southern city of Arta, orientated towards maritime trade. Nevertheless, this period of political turmoil saw the progressive ascension of the northern, inland city of Ioannina, more interested in trade with the Balkans. In the middle of the 14th century, Epirus was divided in four micro-States, of which the two largest had the two cities as rivals for the capital. Ioannina, demographically and militarily stronger, finally won the struggle. Integration into the Ottoman space during the 15 th century did not change the situation: Ioannina is still today the main city of Epirus.
La province byzantine d'Épire constitua du XIII e au XV e s. un État indépendant, dont la capitale était initialement Arta, située au sud du territoire et tournée vers le commerce maritime. Toutefois, cette période politiquement agitée vit l'ascension progressive de Iôannina, située plus au nord, à l'intérieur des terres, et plus tournée vers le commerce balkanique. Au milieu du XIV e s., la région fut morcelée en quatre micro-États, dont les deux plus puissants avaient pour capitales les deux villes rivales. L'affrontement fut finalement remporté par Iôannina, qui prit démographiquement puis militairement l'ascendant. L'intégration dans l'espace ottoman au cours du XV e s. vint confirmer cet état de fait : Iôannina est encore aujourd'hui la principale ville de l'Épire.
