Sensory Expression in the Saharan Context

Marie-Luce Gélard

Résumé

In southeastern Morocco, sensory expression is a common substitute for spoken lan- guage. Men and women often communicate without recourse to speech, which is deemed inappropriate due to rules of modesty, for example. Decoding these sensory displays requires an intimate knowl- edge of the particular society. Once identified, the codes become precious methodological tools. In the Saharan context, they reveal that sensory well-being is characterized by heat and dryness.
