La vie après-voiture, ou comment les ménages démotorisés s’adaptent à un quotidien sans voiture personnelle

Abstract : This article looks at how French households (completely) demotorized, i.e. no longer owning a car but having had at least one in the past. While their number is small (only 8% of households in France according to the 2008 National Transport and Travel Survey (ENTD)), their case is interesting for scientific research and public action in a post-(private) automobile world perspective. The article raises the question of how they adapt their mobility practices to a daily life without a private car. The article hypothesizes differences between motorized, demotorized and car-free households that have never owned a car, depending on whether demotorization is more constrained or chosen, and finally on the age of demotorization, which may favor specific forms of reorganization of lifestyles. The answers come from the statistical analysis of two major national surveys, the ENTD (2008) and the Vehicle Fleet Panel (2015). At the end, we discuss the results obtained from a public policy perspective that would aim to stimulate household demotorization decisions.
